From the John Madden School for the Obvious
Amy and I have a running joke that when someone states the obvious that they are making a “John Madden” observation. It’s not that I don’t like John Madden, but often his commentary is a simple regurgitation of the patently obvious (”after a play like that, you just have to pick up the ball and keep pushing forward”).
So in that spirit, I want to know why we needed researchers to tell us this:
Video Games May Divert Kids From Homework: Playing video games may mean spending less time reading or doing homework, according to new research on video games and children.
How is this newsworthy? Did we really need scientific research to prove this? Is John Madden now performing scientific research?

Help! My Room is a Disaster!
A nine-year-old German girl thought she was being resourceful by pleading for police help to clean up her disastrous bedroom! The police actually showed up and I’m sure the girl didn’t anticipate their response…
Girl calls for police help over messy room.
I hope my daughter never tries to pull this sort of thing!

Pat’s Predictions
Pat Robertson is at it again. He says the Lord told him to expect a massive terrorist attack in the United States in late 2007. Says Pat:
“I have a relatively good track record,” he said. “Sometimes I miss.”
In May, Robertson said God told him that storms and possibly a tsunami were to crash into America’s coastline in 2006. Even though the U.S. was not hit with a tsunami, Robertson on Tuesday cited last spring’s heavy rains and flooding in New England as partly fulfilling the prediction.
Seems to me that Pat throws his darts at a blank wall and then goes and draws bulls-eyes around them…

English Imprecision
Perhaps Apple’s strategy in the UK is to start by hooking judges and lawyers on iTunes?
Apple Computer Inc. is on the defensive in Europe for the second time in as many weeks as the company prepares to battle The Beatles’ record label for its right to distribute music in the United Kingdom’s highest court.
If I was Paul McCartney, I wouldn’t want those barristers listening to my music either.

Be Mine
I’m a day late with this link, but you’ll still get a kick out of these funny valentines from Something Awful.
Everyone knows that Valentine’s Day is a soulless abomination of a holiday invented by an evil consortium of wealthy gardeners and greeting card designers in a desperate attempt to make us buy more flowers and cards. Their nefarious ploy worked, as every year men are forced to buy cards and gifts or face scorn and ridicule.

The Aluminum Foil Helmet Conspiracy
For the ultra-paranoid, this is bad news.
Among a fringe community of paranoids, aluminum helmets serve as the protective measure of choice against invasive radio signals. We investigate the efficacy of three aluminum helmet designs on a sample group of four individuals…Statistical evidence suggests the use of helmets may in fact enhance the government’s invasive abilities. We speculate that the government may in fact have started the helmet craze for this reason.

Fun With Engrish
If you have never visited the Engrish website, you’re missing out on some great, side-splitting humor. Even better is the new “How to make your own Engrish” page.
In a recent post (The Historic Struggle), I quoted Tony Blair from his recent piece which was published in The Observer. This seemed like a perfect candidate for some Engrishification. Here’s the original quote:
We are locked in a historic struggle in Iraq. On its outcome hangs more than the fate of the Iraqi people. Were we to fail, which we will not, it is more than ‘the power of America’ that would be defeated. The hope of freedom and religious tolerance in Iraq would be snuffed out. Dictators would rejoice; fanatics and terrorists would be triumphant.
And now in Engrish:
We tighten with the historical struggle of Iraq. With the result it applies many from destiny of the Iraqi people. Us who fail as for us, America’ which that is; ‘ To be more than the power; That is defeated. The Iraqi freedom and desire of religion allowance inhale the key tobacco. The dictator rejoices; The enthusiastic person and the terrorist are triumphant.
Go add some Engrish to your own blog. Just remember, “For restroom, go backward toward your behind.”
