Rules and Regulations

Posted in Faith and Practice, Culture and Ideas, Justice and Compassion at 6:32 am by Jeff

Unfortunately, this is a common sentiment:

“For me, God’s word was a rule book, and as far as I was concerned, I had already played by the rules and I still felt empty.”

He redeemed us from the curse of the law. Why do so many of us live like we are still under it?

No Mission, No Church

Posted in Faith and Practice, Culture and Ideas at 7:49 am by Jeff

from Acts 29

A church that is not missional is not really a church. A church exists by mission as the sun exists by burning. When the sun loses its burn it ceases to be the sun. When a church loses its mission, it ceases to be a church.

Strong words. Read more: What is a missional church?

If You Build It, They Won’t Come

Posted in Faith and Practice, Culture and Ideas at 6:58 am by Jeff

Most churches follow the “Field of Dreams” model of ministry: if we build it, they will come. If we have the right program, the right environment, the right attraction, then people will show up. This comprises the attractional model of ministry.

The missional model takes a different approach where the church is out in the world and personally inviting people to engage the Christian faith. In a sense, this should still be attractional. Lifestyle, compassion and charity become the attractive elements as opposed to a program or event.

Blind beggar presents a good comparison of the the Attractional model of ministry, versus the Missional model.

Matt Stone also has an interesting discussion on missional ecclesiology.

Missional Mandates

Posted in Faith and Practice, Culture and Ideas at 8:00 am by Jeff

Timothy Cowen discusses the four biblical mandates of the Missional church taken from Matthew 28:18-20; Luke 24:46-49; John 20:21; Acts 1:8

  1. Mission is making disciples of all nations (Matthew).
  2. Mission is proclaiming—making known the gospel (Luke).
  3. Mission is being sent out (John).
  4. Mission is being a physical witness of the Lord Jesus (Acts)

I’m thinking about this one for this year’s “early Christmas” present.

How We Treat Our Children

Posted in Culture and Ideas, Business and Economy at 1:26 pm by Jeff

Margaret Heffernan has an interesting article up at Fast Company.

My favorite blurb from the article:

If you treat employees like children, they will behave that way — which means trouble. If you treat them like adults, they may just respond likewise.

This statement struck me because I think it can be applied to how parents treat their children. This isn’t to say that parents should try to force their kids to become adults too quickly. But often, treating your children like they are immature will result in a self-fulfilling prophecy–you’ll get immature children.

If you treat [your children] like children, they will behave that way — which means trouble. If you treat them like adults, they may just respond likewise.

Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ

Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ

I recently began reading and studying Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ by John Piper. The book comes with a supplemental reading plan (PDF) for added study and meditation. I thought it would be helpful to take this reading plan and hyperlink the Bible passages for easy reference. The rest of this post contains these links to the daily scripture readings from the reading plan. If you find this helpful, drop me a comment.

By they way, you can download the book as a free PDF as well.
