Scripture and Immigration
I’m intrigued at the thought of how American Christians might view the immigration debate if they took this command from God seriously:
“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.”
Leviticus 19:33-34 (ESV)
It makes you think. Are we Americans first, or Followers of Christ first?

I’m sure the Bible also says things like: think things through, do what’s best after having thought things through, respect the laws of the land, etc. etc. All of those would contradict the immoral position taken by, for instance, Cardinal Mahoney.
By outright encouraging illegal immigration, Mahoney is making things even worse. He’s encouraging further worker abuse, he’s helping the Mexican government avoid reforms and send us people they won’t take care of, he’s encouraging further corruption in the U.S. due to those companies that profit off illegal immigration donating to U.S. politicians, and on and on.
His stance is one of fake compassion. Think this whole subject through, and you’ll see that the only moral solution is to enforce our immigration laws.

I’m not endorsing any particular view at this point (and certainly not the extremes of “let them all in”, or “send them all home”). My primary concern is that Christians really do “think this through” and not just as Americans, but as Followers of Christ.

It was interesting to see TLB so I guess I’ll write as TLB2. Or maybe, I should have written T Martinez since most people in your town recognize that. Anyway, just wanted to ask you to give Amy a big hug for me, please.
