It’s about time the goverment did something about reigning itself in. I recently lamented the destruction of property rights by the Supreme Court (Jeff Doolittle dot com: Life? Liberty? Property???). In its Kelo vs. City of New London decision, the court said that the city had the right to sieze property from private citizens in order to give the land to a private company for development.
Now the congress is taking the court to task for this undermining of property rights. HR 4128 is a bill introduced to confront the erosion of property rights. The bill even directly takes on the flawed Supreme Court decision in Kelo:
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Kelo v. City of New London, abuse of eminent domain is a threat to the property rights of all private property owners, including rural land owners (Sec. 7(a)(4)).
Maybe the house can prove Mark Twain wrong.
