Space Elevator in our Lifetime?

Posted in Science and Technology at 12:03 am by Jeff

While Burt Rutan and Paul Allen’s Spaceship One is finding success as the first commercial passenger rocket to reach outer space, some scientists are considering an alternate proposal for expanding our reach into the great beyond.

Space Elevator: Momentum Building

Whether you think this will happen or not, just try to imagine a future with no rockets. Imagine dozens, if not hundreds, of space elevators connected around the equator and reaching out thousands of miles into space. The entire sci-fi genre may need to be rethought.

Take things away from you on behalf of the common good

Posted in Politics and Issues at 5:02 pm by Jeff

Hillary Clinton sums up the philosophy of Democrats very nicely in her recent speech in San Francisco:

“We’re going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.”

As the philosopher Brandeis said, “Experience teaches us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government’s purposes are beneficent.” Watch out for Democratic politicians bearing gifts, because they expect you to pay for them.

The Side of Caution

Posted in Politics and Issues at 1:14 pm by Jeff

Environmental activists constantly call on us to err on the side of caution where human activity affects an eco-system. It’s about time the world woke up and began erring on the side of caution regarding the abortion of millions of babies.

Welcome Back Comments

Posted in General at 9:08 am by Jeff

On Saturday, I happened to be checking my e-mail at the perfect time. While perusing my inbox, I suddenly received a flood of new comments on my blog (I send notification to my e-mail when comments are added to my blog). I knew something was wrong when I checked the content of these comments and wanted to kvetch into the nearest trash can.

I had hoped I could leave my blog open to the world to comment freely. Sadly, someone decided to take advantage of my openness, forcing me to completely shut down the ability to leave comments here.

Hopefully I can win this war. I’ve just installed MT-Blacklist in the hopes that it can keep my blog clean and free of this trash, while still allowing you, oh faithful reader, the ability to leave comments. We’ll see how it goes. In the meantime, I’d appreciate your insights into this problem and how you might have solved it on your blog. Leave a comment and let me know what’s worked for you.

The End Of Comments

Posted in Personal at 11:14 pm by Jeff

I received a massive comment spam attack tonight. Fortunately, I was online and able to thwart the attackers efforts to litter my blog with disgusting trash (and I do mean disgusting). I’ll have to look into a better comment spam fighting solution before I can allow comments to be left on my blog. I’ll keep you posted.

Baby Update

Posted in Personal at 10:20 pm by Jeff

Sleep is elusive as Amy recovers from her C-section and needs me to pick up the baby for her at night when he needs to eat. Kaitlyn and Kyle are adjusting well to life as big sister and brother and haven’t shown any major regression to more childish behavior (yet). They can certainly tell, however, that things have changed and will never be the same. We’re enjoying our new son but can’t wait until he sleeps through the night.

We have a bunch of pictures but I need to doctor them up in Photoshop before posting (red-eye and such). I should have some ready on Monday. Until then, pray we get lots of sleep!

Jack William Doolittle

Our new addition arrived at 8:48 AM at 7 lbs. 8 oz., 20 inches. Jack has a head of thick black hair (but so did Kyle at birth and he’s blonde now). Kaitlyn and Kyle are so excited to have a new baby brother. I look forward to your leaving a comment of congratulations to us on the arrival of our son (yes, that’s a shameless request to get you to comment). I’ll post pictures tomorrow and perhaps resume regular blogging in a week or so.

Baby on Wednesday

Posted in Personal at 9:30 am by Jeff

If all things go according to plan, we’ll have a new baby on Wednesday morning. Expect continued light blogging as I’m trying to tie up loose ends at work and will be taking the remainder of this week off.

I’m Back

Posted in Personal at 10:36 am by Jeff

Things are getting hectic around our house, so you didn’t get to hear from me at all last week. To give you an idea of just how crazy things are, my wife and I were attending a Reagan Memorial dinner on Saturday with David Limbaugh as the guest speaker. Throughout the dinner, my wife has having labor contractions which got progressively more frequent (she’s at 36 weeks). After a wonderful dinner and a time of remembrance of President Reagan, David was finally introduced and walked up to the podium. Just before Mr. Limbaugh uttered his first words, Amy informed me that her contractions were only 5 minutes apart. We had to depart the dinner and rush to the hospital.

We didn’t come home with a baby this weekend, so I’m back in the office this week, trying to tie up a few loose ends with my clients before the baby arrives. Looks like it could be any minute now. If I disappear again, you’ll know why.

Death of a Hero (1911-2004)

Posted in Personal at 9:19 pm by Jeff

Since I was a child I felt a connection with the “Great Communicator” since we shared the same day of birth. Perhaps this connection had a hand in influencing my ultimate political convictions, perhaps not. Either way, Ronald Wilson Reagan was a great man and a great American, sure to be remembered in history as one of America’s greatest presidents. Mr. President, may God receive you with open arms into the rest of his everlasting Kingdom. You will be missed and I will always remember you as my president.

Spectrum Deregulation

Posted in Science and Technology, Politics and Issues, Business and Economy, Computers and Internet at 10:03 am by Jeff

If you’re like me, you’re probably longing for the day of ubiquitous high speed wireless internet connections. We’ve all heard the promises of “3G” wireless (streaming video to your cell phone, mobile laptops, etc.) but the technology isn’t delivering (New Wireless Systems Push 3G Onto the Defensive). What’s holding us back from a wireless wonderland? Spectrum wars.

The laws of physics are such that there is only a limited amount of radio frequency spectrum available for signal transmission. Government agencies (the FCC in the U.S.) manage what traffic flows on each portion of the spectrum. In typical fashion, the government’s role has turned to mis-mangement, leaving large portions of frequency unused because it has been allocated only for a specific purpose (T.V. transmission, for example).

What we really need is a long term plan for the FCC to deregulate the spectrum and hand off management to private enterprise. The Internet could become the backbone for large volume data transfers, with distributed, regional transmission towers allowing wireless access to data streams. Instead of assigning specific uses to each band, the FCC could take a cue from the Internet.

TCP/IP is the lingua franca of the Internet. What is needed is a similar lingua franca for wireless data transmission. This could facilitate the deregulation process. Instead of allocating specific frequencies for particular technological use, frequencies would only be restricted to an allowable transmission range. Some frequencies would be used for long distance transmission, others for short range, but all would use a standard wireless transmission protocol.

The FCC should create a roadmap to this kind of a future. An infrastructure of this type would be the envy of the civilized world and would spur a tremendous explosion of economic growth in the United States.

To Infinity and Beyond

Posted in Science and Technology at 9:29 am by Jeff

This month may mark the beginning of a new renaissance in space travel. If the SpaceShipOne team can successfully launch into space, the event could be as significant as the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk. This could also mark the beginning of a shift where free market forces and private enterprise begin to take over in our quest for space exploration.

Photoshop for Photographers

Posted in Music and Literature, Computers and Internet at 1:38 pm by Jeff

Last fall I made my final migration away from film cameras in favor of digital. I love the level of control I have by using Photoshop to edit my images before making prints. I no longer lose money on wasted film or bad prints.

I ran across a site today that has some great ideas for using Photoshop to edit images. The Twisted Tree Articles and Reviews page has some great resources and ideas for getting the most out of your pictures. Read through some of the articles and try applying their techniques. You’ll be making perfect prints in no time.
