Back in January I laid down this challenge at the World Magazine Blog:
“I’d like someone to give me a lucid explanation of what it means to be a ‘Compassionate Conservative.’”
I didn’t realize it until today, but the magazine’s Editor in Chief, Marvin Olasky, responded to my question. Marvin is a respected commentator over at Town Hall and has been a professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin since 1983.
Doggone it, I just may need to read Marvin’s book now. It’s aptly entitled Compassionate Conservatism. What do you think of Marvin’s definition of “Compassionate Conservatism?” Talk back below.

Expand your blogging world. Check out the great blog links from the Carnival of the Vanities.
This week the Carnival highlights the following entry from JDDC:
Yes, I am shamelessly promoting the new Carnival of the Consumers. You should be too! Note also that I have been listed at the top of the last two Carnival of the Vanities in a row! Is it the start of a trend?

Live and let live? I don’t think so…
David Wright-Neville, a terrorism expert at Australia’s Monash University, said some Abu Sayyaf members may have changed tactics due to the U.S. deployment of hundreds of troops to help Manila defeat the group after the September 11 attacks.
“It suggests that what that might have done is radicalise some elements of the Abu Sayyaf group to the point where they are now considering these sorts of mass casualty attacks,” he said.
Oh, I see. We shouldn’t try to root them out and risk angering them in the process. This is the same “leave the terrorists alone and they will leave us alone” logic that brought us the USS Cole, the 1993 WTC bombing, the Kenya Embassy bombing and eventually the WTC/Pentagon disaster of 9/11/2001.
How about considering that perhaps this is a desperate attempt at survival for a dwindling organization? Since kidnapping innocent missionaries didn’t work, the terrorists are now taking greater risks. As they come out of the jungle, they are easier to capture. Folks, this is a sign that the war on terror is being won in the Philippines.
Abu Sayyaf, adieu.

Headline: Democrat Kerry Proposes Cut in Corporate Taxes
Kerry offered an economic trade-off he said would help create 10 million new jobs in four years.
Headline: Kerry Reveals Plan to Keep Jobs in U.S.
Economists questioned whether it would do much to halt the hemorrhaging of manufacturing jobs to foreign countries.
It may sound good on the surface, but all Kerry really wants to do is punish companies for maintaining overseas operations. This serves his purposes of perpetuating class warfare between “evil multi-nationals” and the proverbial “little-guy.” This is veiled protectionism, nothing more.

Companies aren’t outsourcing simply to find cheaper labor. They are doing it because America isn’t business friendly enough to attract them to stay.
The impact of outsourcing on US unemployment has been grossly exaggerated, according to a study that said US authorities should improve supply-side initiatives before penalising companies that ship jobs overseas.
Productivity gains, the 2000 dot.com bust, and weak US and international economies were much more important factors in the job losses of the past three years than the much ballyhooed phenomenon of offshoring, according to the trade group that represents the US high-tech sector.

Today’s market overview from Yahoo! has more bad news for John Kerry:
…there is increased talk today that job growth will pick up in the months ahead…the low level of new claims, coupled with the upbeat manufacturing employment survey…is adding to recent data that suggests layoffs have clearly slowed, and that hiring plans are picking up…that may not translate into a big gain for March payrolls, but confidence is rising that stronger gains do lie in the months ahead…
How long will the Democrats keep bashing on the economy when it is clearly strong and vibrant?

I’m having fun these days teaching my three-year-old daughter the difference between stars and planets (”but they look the same, Daddy!?”).
Five planets are arrayed across the evening sky in a spectacular night show that won’t be back for another three decades. For the next two weeks, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn–the five closest planets–should be easily visible at dusk, along with the moon.

Fundrace.org is a website which transparently reveals information on donors to political campaigns. The breadth of information on the site is staggering and a bit scarry.
The site let’s you key in any address and find each donor within a small radius of that address. I punched in my home address and immediately saw a list of people I know. I wasn’t surprised by what I saw, but it’s amazing that this information is freely available in this form. Here’s the privacy statement from the website.
All the information presented on Fundrace.org is part of the public record and provided by the Federal Election Commission of the United States.
Anyone who contributes “hard money” to political campaigns must provide personal information. This requirement limits the political influence of wealthy, anonymous individuals and allows the public to track financial contributions that may influence the political process.
In an effort to further transparency and political accountability, FundRace.org provides an interface to help the general public understand these public records.

About the Carnival of the Consumers
For those of you out there who are blogwise, you already know about the weekly Carnivals which float around the blogosphere. Each carnival is unique; some are hosted by the same person each week, others float around from site to site; some are serious, some are silly. Each Carnival contains links to blog posts from around the web. One of the problems is that none of the Carnivals is particularly useful. Informative or entertaining, yes, but not practically useful in any meaningful way.
It’s time for a new Carnival: the Carnival of the Consumers.
The purpose of this new Carnival is to share your experiences with the products you interact with each day. Whether it is a car, computer, guitar, or cleaning product, this is your chance to tell the world what you love/hate about something you’ve purchased in the past 3 months. What did you pay for the item? Where did you purchase it? Would you recommend the product to others? How does it compare to competing products? Tell us all about it.
Here are some parameters
- Don’t submit adult-oriented or sexual enhancement products. In other words, keep it family friendly so everyone can enjoy the benefits of the information.
- No prescriptions, medications or over the counter drugs.
- No stocks, bonds or other investment vehicles (this is not your chance to tout your favorite stock pick).
- Don’t try to start a boycot of a product here. The goal is to inform people in their purchasing decisions, not to promote consumer/political activism.
- This is not a place to announce new products or software releases that you haven’t personally used. We want to hear about your interaction with a product.
- Flat out rants and unabashed raves will probably not be posted. Try to be balanced in your review.
- Try to focus on products, not services (this won’t be a hard and fast rule, just a guideline).
- Try to focus on the manufacturer, not the seller (also not a hard and fast rule).
- Please do share your experience with the manufacturer’s customer service department.
- I reserve complete editorial oversight and am not compelled to post anything you send.
Please include the phrase “Carnival of the Consumers” in the subject line of your submission. Send me the following information when you submit your entry:
- Your Name
- Your E-mail
- Blog Name
- Blog URL
- Entry Title
- Entry URL/Permalink
- Trackback URL (if you want a ping)
- Comments, Excerpt, etc.
Send entries to jeffdoolittle [at] yahoo [d0t] com.
If you’d like to join the CotConsumers mailing list, send a message to: cotconsumers-subscribe [at] yahoogroups [d0t] com. This address is not for submitting entries, but for being notified about events relating to the Carnival (like when a new edition is online).

Across the political spectrum, most Americans would agree that we are at war. I am not referring to the reconstruction of Iraq, but to the more broadly defined war on terror. Left or right, Republican, Democrat or Libertarian, we were all transformed by the awesome display of hatred which overtook our televisions just 30 months ago. Our President chose to take decisive action against those who would threaten our livelihood by demolishing their training facilities and holding outlaw regimes accountable. The trouble is, this war is not winnable; at least not in the conventional sense.

To hear the terrorists speak, they are merely trying to throw off the shackles of an oppressor:
“We tell fighters in Palestine, especially Hamas and Jihad, that your real enemy is the tyrant of the age, America, because Sheikh Yassin was killed by American money, weapons and political and media support.”
Trouble is, these guys are not anti-tyrrany freedom fighters. They do not believe in the ideals of liberty: freedoms of speech, assembly, religion, etc. Their true purpose is to implement a tyrrany of their own.
